A photographer’s perspective on branding sessions—and why you don’t need to be camera-ready

I’ll be honest. I was nervous.

As a branding photographer in Portland, Maine, I’m usually the one behind the lens. I know every angle, every trick, every way to make someone look and feel their best.

But the moment I stepped in front of the camera for my own branding session? All of that knowledge went right out the window.

What should I wear?
Is my hair okay?
Will the camera catch every wrinkle I’ve been ignoring?

Sound familiar?

Here’s what I want you to know: those feelings are completely normal—even for someone who does this every day.

What got me through it was trusting the process…the same process I walk every single one of my clients through. Good light. A comfortable space. A photographer who sees you, not your insecurities.

And the result?

Photos that actually look like me. Confident. Authentic. Ready for the work I love.

If you’ve been putting off a branding session or professional headshots because you’re worried about how you’ll look, this post is your sign. You don’t need to be camera-ready. You just need to show up. I’ll direct you on how to pose to look your best, and the message you’d like your photos to convey.

Instead of the photo session being something you thought you’d dread, I craft an enjoyable experience, one where you’ll leave feeling confident! The end result is a professional portrait you are proud to display on your website, newsletter or on LinkedIn.

If you’re considering branding photography or professional headshots in Portland, Maine, my approach is designed to make the experience feel natural, comfortable, and tailored to you. The result being images that reflect both your professionalism and your personality.

Every now and then I hop in front of the camera and have my assistant photographer take updated photos. It surely helps me understand things from the other side of the camera!

Maine Photographer, Joanne Lee

I hope to see you in front my camera soon!
